About UHN Youth Leadership Internship
At Unity Health Navigators, we believe that the young people growing up in our communities are not just the future of public health — they are its most essential asset right now. The PATH™ Youth Leadership Internship is our investment in them.
This leadership program is for 11th and 12th grade students who will receive hands-on public health training, professional development, and real-world community engagement experience at UHN.
This is not a shadowing program. This is not busy work. This is a structured, professional internship experience that will prepare students for entry level Community Engagement, Public Health Initiatives, and Community Service — while you are still in high school.
What You Will Learn
All students will be trained in two areas:
Professional Foundations and Community Engagement. These are the skills that matter in every branch of public health— no matter where your career takes you.
Part I — Professional Foundations
Before you can serve your community, you need to know how you show up for it!
Interns will learn:
*How to dress professionally and presentably for a public health work environment
*How to answer phone calls, take accurate notes, and communicate with professionalism
*How to respond to emails in a clear, culturally sensitive, and respectful manner
*How to document Protected Health Information (PHI) — a foundational clinical and ethical skill
*How to practice Humanizing Care — treating every person you serve with dignity, empathy, and respect
Part II — Who Should Apply
UHN's Leadership Internship is a competitive opportunity designed for motivated,
community-minded "YOUNG PEOPLE" who are ready for an introductory experience into the world
of public health, through a Community Engagement Lens.
Grade Level: Current 11th or 12th grade student
GPA Requirement: Minimum 2.5 GPA ("C" average or above)
Nomination: Must be nominated by a current teacher or school counselor
Interest: Interest in public health, healthcare, social work, or community service
Commitment: Able to commit to the full internship schedule and program requirements
You are not expected to have "it" all figured out. You do not need to know exactly what you want to do in Public Health. You just need to care about your community — and be willing to learn.
How to Apply
1. Get Nominated
Ask a current teacher or school counselor to submit a nomination on your behalf. They will complete a short nomination form available on this page. You cannot apply without a nomination.
2. Complete the Student Application
Fill out the student application form below with your full name, school, grade, GPA, and your nominating teacher or counselor's name.
3. Write Your Personal Essay
Submit a one-page essay (3-4 paragraphs) that includes: (1) An introduction — who you are and a bit about your background.
(2) Why you are interested in public health.
(3) Your goals — school, certifications, degrees, and career.
(4) Why you want this internship and what you hope to gain from it. Essays should be typed, double-spaced, 12pt font, and submitted as a PDF or Word document.
4. Submit & Wait
Once your nomination and application are both submitted, our team will review all materials. Selected applicants will be contacted for a brief virtual interview. All applicants will be notified of their status by the application deadline.
